That Is Beautiful

My Dear Daughter,

I’m feeling the need to tell you something…

YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!

As I look at the world today, it’s not difficult to see that the culture’s terms for beauty are becoming increasingly unattainable, drastically inconsistent and hopelessly flawed.

We are told to search for beauty in our weight, hair styles, complexion, bra size, wardrobes, skin color, makeup, flaunting, celebrities, magazines, billboards, diet pills, extreme exercising, plastic surgery, wrinkle cremes, and anything else we have empowered to shape and mold our image.

Yet, all of these efforts are futile.

Our culture’s definition of beauty is toxic! And much of our society has fallen victim to its venom – leaving the minds of men and women crippled in the web of its falsity. The world is full of people who do not know how to recognize true beauty when it stares them in the face – I know because I used to be (and still battle against being) one of them.

Throughout your life, you will encounter many different opinions and standards of beauty. You can not and will not meet every calculation – it’s impossible.

So, my sweet girl, my advice to you is this:

Don’t measure your beauty by the reaction of the crowds, but rather by your reflection in the eyes of your Creator.

It’s true, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, God is the only one with the ability to behold your heart – and He cares more about the form of your character than the form of your appearance.

I am amazed by how much beauty I already see that He has placed inside you!!

That time that you continued to play and be friendly with that girl who was being really mean to you..

The way you so quickly forgive people when they hurt your feelings..

That is beautiful.

The times you grab a book and sit next to your brother and begin reading it with him..

When you help teach him how to do new things..20150613_173723

That is beautiful.

When you ask to make cookies so we can take them to our neighbors..

Your desire to show kindness towards others..

That is beautiful.

When you initiate prayer for that person who is sick..

Then you ask me to get out the supply of stickers, pens, crayons, glue and glitter so you can make them a card..20150325_164709

That is beautiful.

When you play with that girl that none of the other kids want to play with..

The moments you reach out and be-friend the one who doesn’t have friends..

That is beautiful.

The nights you come jump up on my bed to tell me stories..

Your way of making me laugh for no reason..20150502_132135

That is beautiful.

The way you love to worship the Lord..

Those moments that you don’t care who sees you singing and dancing for Him..

That is beautiful.

The softness of your character and the gentleness in your heart..

The compassion in your actions and the joy in your spirit..

Your out-going personality and your childlike faith..

That is beautiful.

It is my prayer that this is the beauty that you will always long to possess. That you will have the ability to see through all the other deceptive expectations that the world will throw at you. That you continue to seek the beauty that pleases the only One whose opinion truly matters.

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
~Proverbs 31:30

    1. Thank you, Lisa. In today’s world, it’s so easy to loose sight of what true beauty means..especially as a young girl. I hope and pray my daughter (and everyone, really) is able to see through it all. Thanks for your encouragement 🙂

  1. This is so encouraging! Beauty should not be defined by the media and what the world around us is telling us because are beauty has already been defined by our PERFECT creator who does NOT make mistakes. He says we are HIs masterpieces who are fearfully and wonderfully made. Thanks for this reminder.
