What does Paul mean by our ‘inheritance’ ?

You were marked in Him with a seal – the promised Holy Spirit – who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance.

– Ephesians 1:14

Guaranteeing our inheritance!

You hear that?

The Holy Spirit is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance!

But what is our inheritance?

Paul mentions it later in Ephesians, too:

I pray also that the eyes of your hearts may be enlightened that you may know the hope to which you are called – the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints.

But again, what is this inheritance?

And what are the riches?

Paul doesn’t tell us.

Why not?

Look again.

I pray that the eyes of your hearts may be enlightened so that you may know...

We have to know it.

Paul couldn’t tell us.

We have to discover it for ourselves.

It’s like some delicious food – you can tell someone how good it tastes but they can’t truly know how good it is until they’ve tasted it themselves.

Right?

Well it’s the same with our inheritance in Christ.

We have to know it.

And the only way we will know, says Paul, is when the eyes of our hearts have been enlightened.

But how do I do that? I hear you ask. How do I enlighten the eyes of my heart?

There’s only one way, says Paul, and that is to pray! Ask God.

So, in answer to the question “What is our inheritance?”

I don’t know!

But I do know we have a Father who promises us everything:

He who did not spare his own Son but gave Him up for us all…how will he not also graciously give us all things?

– Romans 8:32

Amen!

Hey!

Hey there. I’m Steve Edwards. I’m an actor, a writer, a teacher and a preacher!

This site explores the meaning of St. Paul’s words ‘by grace we are saved’. I hope it helps you to understand that we are loved by God completely, purely, fully, regardless of our mistakes. He loves us not because of who we are, but because of who He is, and what He did for us on the cross. Amen!

Please explore the hundreds of articles on the different books of the bible, and how the bible reveals that our holiness is a gift from God, and doesn’t depend on us and our good works. Thank God for that!
