God, Please Just Tell Me What To Do!

silence

“Ok Lord, I’ve got this decision hovering over my head and I’m not sure what the best answer is. Please just tell me what to do! ”

Have you ever prayed that prayer?

I have…often!

Actually, this is the prayer that my husband and I were praying together recently.

A couple months ago, the Optometrist my husband worked with at Costco informed him that was buying a practice out of the area and would be moving. He also offered to rent his home here to us. This seemed like a great option but, we first wanted to pray about it and ask the LordΒ  if this move was really something he wanted us to pursue.

So, we spent some time in prayer about it, but we were not getting the response we were hoping for – no open or close doors; no audible voices; no signs or wonders; no impressions in our spirit; no confirmation to move or not to move.

So now what?

What do we do when God’s voice seems to be silent?

Our desire is to just do what He wants us to do, but how can we move forward when He doesn’t lay the path before us?

Does He not care? Is this decision not significant enough to merit His opinion and guidance? — I don’t think so..

“You scrutinize my path and my lying down,
And are intimately acquainted with all my ways.”
Psalm 139:3
(context)

He cares about me. He cares about what I do. He cares about the choices I make.

**Although, this can be taken to an extreme. I don’t believe He has an opinion about whether we eat an apple or an orange; or if we wear a gray sock or black sock. But if the choice will have a measure of genuine impact in our life – then yes, He cares.**

So why it is that He sometimes remains silent???

God loves us and has given us the gift of free-will.

I think we often forget about another precious gift He has given us – a companion He intends us to call upon when exercising our free-will:

Her name is Wisdom.

For the Lord gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7Β He stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
He is a shield to those who walk in integrity,
8Β Guarding the paths of justice,
And He preserves the way of His godly ones.
Proverb 2:6-8

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God,
who gives generously to all without finding fault,
and it will be given to you.
James 1:5

On this road of life we come upon many forks that bring choices. Some more significant than others.

Should I take that job?

Should we have another child?

Should I invest my time, talents and treasure into this ministry?

Should I go back to school?

Should I marry this person?

Should I forsake life as I now know it to pursue this passion?

Should we pack up our life in this house to move to another one?

Sometimes, when we approach these divides we are given precise instruction in which path to take – but many times we are not. I believe these unmarked crossings are moments in which God is giving us freedom – freedom to make a wise choice.

If we acknowledge Him and follow the principles He has laid out in His Word, He will honor the choices we make.

“..in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path”
Proverb 3:6
(context)

After asking the Lord to open our ears to widsom’s voice and discussing it further – we made the choice to move!

So starting this week, my time will be spent packin’ up, headin’ out and movin’ in. πŸ™‚

  1. This is very good. I’ve said that so many times in my walk with God, not wanting to step out of his will for my life. Many times he’s been silent and other times he will provide answers.
But to be honest this is the best article I’ve read with this question in mind and i appreciate it.
The Lord has asked a lot of me lately and I’m just moving along by faith. But sometimes you really want to know if you’re doing the right thing, still on the right path, still at the center of His will and not acting on my own.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom. I appreciate it!

  2. Along these same lines is something many of us struggle with at time… discernment. I have experienced this myself where my desire to do God’s will leads me to times pf prayer and petition…. truly seeking His guidance. But often the lack of a clear direction turns into fear of making the “wrong” choice. How often do we get paralyzed and simply make no decision for fear of making a wrong one…?

Something I have discussed with many seasoned Christians, yet continue to struggle with. The only answer I have when not receiving clear guidance to my prayer…. PRAY SOME MORE!

    1. Great point! There are times that God doesn’t give an answer right away cause He wants us to keep seeking Him!! ..thats where the discernment comes in ‘are you giving me freedom to decide, Lord or do you want me to keep asking’. Just like wisdom, I believe He will gives us discernment when we ask. πŸ™‚

  3. I love this. How awesome that you and your husband come together in prayer to seek God’s guidance. It’s the key to a blessed marriage (which I did not have). Praise God!! Oh, the countless number of times that I have prayed that since giving my heart to God and continue to pray that for me and my children. God wants to be actively involved in our lives and He will orchestrate our paths. God bless you and may He continue to orchestrate and bless your path!!

  4. God saw wisdom as something so important He dedicated an entire book to it in the Bible. However, I never really thought of things this way, of how to handle His “silent voice.” What an eye opener! Thanks!

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
