But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.
– 2 Peter 3:18
You’ve heard people say this. “I’m really growing in grace.” Or “Are you growing in grace?” Or my favorite: “You need to grow in grace.”
I sure do!
But what does it actually mean?
Does ‘grow in grace’ mean to grow in our own grace towards others? To show more mercy and forgiveness when people upset us, are angry with us, insult us?
Or does it mean we are to grow in God’s grace – that is, become more fully aware of the power of God’s grace so that our awe for His beauty, majesty and amazing love increases?
Check out Peter’s statement. He doesn’t say grow in your own grace. He says ‘grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour…’
Grow in the grace of Jesus.
The more we realize the unlimited grace on offer to us, the more grateful and in awe of Him we become.
And the more in awe of Him we become, the more we gaze on Him, and the more we gaze on Him, Paul says, the more we become like Him – as in a mirror, from glory to glory.
And, the result of this is, showing grace and mercy and forgiveness to others becomes more natural as we become less and He becomes more.
Amen!
