Saying the Holy Spirit only helps us to live righteously puts the responsibility on us to overcome sin.
We become our own Savior. And don’t we love this?!
But this is wrong.
There is only one Saviour…
Christ.
Our rigtheousness doesn’t come from our own actions, our own good deeds. As Isaiah says, “all our righteous acts are like filthy rags.”
Isaiah was overwhelmed with joy when he discovered his righteousness came from God:
“I am overwhelmed with joy in the Lord my God for He has dressed me in a robe of His righteousness.”
Not his own righteousness. But God’s righteousness!
Paul was equally overwhelmed:
“I consider everything rubbish compared to the insurpassable greatness of knowing Christ Jesus, my LORD. Not having a righteouness of my own that comes from obeying the law, but that which is through faith in Christ. A righteousness that comes from God and is by faith!”
Our righteousness comes by faith.
It has nothing to do with what we do or don’t do, our good deeds or righteous acts.
Our righteousness is a free ‘gift’ (Romans 5:17).
“We cannot sin” if we are in Christ (1 John 5:18) “because Christ’s ‘seed’ lives in us.”
“We are shielded by God’s power” – as Peter says.
We are covered in the blood of Christ.
Joseph Prince likens it to be being a stone in a waterfall, perpetually being cleaned, forgiven, purified.
Spurgeon likened it to “bathing in Christs’s blood.”
The fact is, whatever we do, good or bad, if we are in Christ we are free.
And if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed!
This is why grace is so amazing!
But friends, as Paul says, let’s not use our freedom to indulge the sinful nature.
But let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds.
