In the times I find myself wandering through the territory of grumpiness, pride, fear, self-pity, jealousy, doubt or anxiety, I can turn on the path of Ephesians chapter 1 and allow it’s treasures to renew my perspective.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ (Eph 1:3)
What is a spiritual blessing in the heavenly places?
These blessings are not experienced in the natural realm. They are in accordance with the new spiritual position we have with God in Christ.
Here is what our condition was formally:
“..remember that you were at that time separate from Christ, excluded from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.” (Eph 2:12)
We are holy and blameless
“He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him..”
We are adopted as sons and daughters
“In love He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of his will..”
We are redeemed
“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us..”
We know the mystery of His will
“He made know the mystery of His will…that is, the summing up of all things in Christ, things in the heavens and things on the earth.”
I want to elaborate a tad on this one. I admit that in the past, this is a verse that I have kinda skimmed over. Once I studied and tasted the meat of this scripture, it led to beautiful understanding. There is other verses in Ephesians that discuss this mystery of His will…
“By referring to this, when you read you can understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which in other generations was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed to His holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit; to be specific, that the Gentiles are fellow heirs and fellow members of the body, and fellow partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel..” (Ephesians 3:4-6)
Just think about that..the men and women of biblical times did not and could not comprehend the development of God’s plan for salvation through the blood of Christ. They did not foresee His intention of restoring relationship not only with Israel, but with all of mankind.
We live in the church era in which we fully apprehend and partake of this mystery!!!!
We have hope of an eternal inheritance
“also we have obtained an inheritance..”
We have been given the Holy Spirit
“..you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.”
The terrain of life has many valleys and heights; trials and triumphs; bad days and good. Yet, through it all I remain seated with Christ in the heavenly places. These blessings are mine. I always have reason to praise Him, to be filled with joy inexpressible and full of glory.
