OK, I’m going to venture away from my typical post genre for a minute..
I’m just wondering…whats up with all the selfies? I just scrolled down my facebook news feed and, I kid you not, over half of them were pics that people took of themselves – doing nothing.
Allow me to ask a couple questions..why should I care about what color lipstick you are wearing, or what you are doing in the bathroom, or what you are wearing to workout in… are you trying to kiss me through the computer screen?? 🙂 …has our generation really become this egocentric?
I know this probably sounds really rude. That’s the problem with reading words instead of hearing them. If you could hear the tone of my voice, you would hear love, gentleness and concern.
So with that said, let me plunge into some deeper waters..
There have been many gods throughout the ages that we have set up and lowered our knees to. I would say one of the predominate idols that has consumed our society today, is oneself. We live in a self-indulged time in which people are taught to love and worship themselves. This is what is portrayed throughout our culture…
“Do what feels right to ‘you’”
“Truth is defined upon what ‘you’ believe in ‘your’ heart”
…I could go on, but I think you get the idea.
I believe this self-worship culture has created this problem: life has become one big competition.
We are all competing to be the best, look the best, live laugh and love the best. We (some more than others) need the approval and (dare I say) jealousy of others. We want to be better than the people around us.
And because of today’s advancements in social media we have the ability to instantly connect the world to our lives and prove how great it is.
Hence, the selfie.
But what is really the root issue behind all this?
I believe it is fear. It’s a fear I think we all share..
The fear of insignificance.
We all want to matter, to know in the deepest part of our souls that we have meaning, value and significance that is unique from anyone else.
I respectfully challenge those who disagree with me on any of these points to honestly examine their motives and hearts.
I will be the first to admit that I struggle with this. To be completely honest, there is a part of me that hopes you read this post then ‘like’ it, just to feed my ego and know that my thoughts and opinions are of importance to you.
We all long for significance.
But, for those who may not yet know, we DO have a purpose! We DO matter! When we were fashioned together in the womb, our Creator also fashioned works, a purpose, value and meaning for us to walk in; but we must seek Him to find it. This is not something that can be found within ourselfie. 🙂
