Adam… Eve… in Eden.
“And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.”
I wonder what this marriage was like…
They lived in those first moments of perfection. Their communion with God knew no barrier.
There was no hiding, no need to cover up any fragment of their being. No hint of jealousy, fear, pride or guilt. Their only knowledge was that of good.
Their nakedness went beyond the realm of physical and touched their character. They were in every sense, naked – yet knew no shame.
A marriage bound in absolute love and unity.
“Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.”
Sin enters the scene. Sin steals, sin kills and it destroys. Sin causes shame and shame causes hiding and covering up.
But, He had a plan!
A plan to provide a covering for sin through the blood of His Son. A plan to restore an intimate relationship not just with Him, but with each other.
I believe we can experience a glimpse of the intimacy in our marriages today that Adam and Eve shared during those first moments of theirs. We live in a fallen world but, as His people, we have been made new. We have been sanctified. The sin, the shame we once possessed has been washed away.
The difference between our level of intimacy and theirs – theirs was achieved effortlessly. We must toil for ours.
Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. (Genesis 3:17)
Although this scripture doesn’t connect directly with marriage relationships, there are other verses that connect the principle. After the fall, as the ground required work/labor to reap a harvest, relationships also need effort/work to reap intimacy.
This is a truth that I need to be reminded of often. Its so easy to fall into the pit of complacency.
But, praise the LORD that I am able to have this ‘unashamed nakedness’ with my husband!
Also, here is some interesting insight I recently came across…
Could it be…similar to how God provided a covering for us, he also provided one for Adam and Eve? If you look at Genesis 3:21 you read this…
“The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them.”
God made coverings for Adam and Eve from animal skin. Where did the skin come from? An animal sacrifice had to be made. God provided a sacrifice and covering for their sin. Even in the first moments that sin entered the world, God pointed to the atoning sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.
Oh, Lord my God!
You are so good in all your ways!
