Knowing Him · Mommyhood

Our Adventure in Redding

We went to Redding this last weekend to visit my mom. We arrived Saturday evening and quickly got unpacked. Ready to RELAX.

almost…

IMG_0228First, DS had his first ER visit.

I woke up around 1:30am hearing him coughing. I went into the bedroom where he was sleeping and picked him up. His breathing seemed very shallow and heavy. I sat with him for a couple minutes hoping his breathing would become more regular if he could calm down.

It didn’t. It got worse.

I took him into the bedroom Casey and I were sleeping in. Casey said it sounded like he was maybe having an asthma attack. Asthma runs in his family. So, I woke up my mom (being a nurse) to get her opinion. She held him while I frantically searched for my phone to call his pediatrician. As I was getting ready to call, my mom suggested we just take him to the ER in case his airway was closing.  My mom gets DS’s car seat in the car while I grab our insurance info.

We get into the car and I sit in the back seat next to him.  In this moment, fear enters. But, instead of letting it reign in my mind, I start to pray. I sing praise to the Lord over my son. It’s amazing the peace that comes when we remember to do this. Peace that leaves no room for any fear.

“The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace,
because he trusts in You”
(Isaiah 26:3)

As I’m singing, he quiets and looks up at me. It’s as if his eyes were a doorway into his thoughts…”thanks for trusting God for me, Mommy”. Such a sweet moment!

Once we get to the hospital he seems to be doing much better. Turns out he had croup, which is very common and easily treated by inhaling a cool mist. I had never experienced this before with either of my children so I had no clue what this was.

So 20 minutes with a cool mist treatment and we were on our way home. Praise the Lord!

On Sunday, after spending a good portion of the early morning in the ER, I was exhausted. I spent a lot of time doing this..

DD got to spend a lot of time with Grandma..

The reason for wanting to go on this trip was to see my mom, but also so Casey and I could go to our favorite restaurant for our anniversary. Sunday evening my mom watched the kids while Casey and I went out to dinner.

On Monday, we did a lot of this…

Reading Francis Chan's Crazy Love on my Kindle while Bethany plays
Relaxing in the sunshine, reading Francis Chan’s Crazy Love on my kindle while DD plays

and this…

It was a fun trip! It was great to be reminded of the goodness and faithfulness of our God. It was great to see my mom and Dan. It was great to have a sweet date night with my husband. 🙂

  1. Amazing how our “sin nature” or “painful emotions”, (which are so real), often pull us from reacting as you are here. So sweet how the Lord drew you to remember HIM first. So beautiful the picture reminder of little Micah thanking you for trusting God when He couldn’t. I’ll bet your Mama was trusting God for YOU too, in ways she knew you were struggling….perhaps those sweet prayers helped you find that place of peace/rest/courage in the face of hurting for your dear baby. Love your verse reference…a beauty to memorize! 🙂 Hugs and love your way!

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
