Sunday Sermon: Living by Faith

Published on

in

For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”

(Romans 1:16-17)

Sometimes I hear people say ‘I live by faith’ (meaning they rely on God to provide for them supernaturally).

I live by faith. I trust God for my income. Cheques mysteriously arrive in the post. A stranger paid my rent for a year.

That’s amazing!

God’s amazing!

But is that actually what ‘living by faith’ means?

Let’s look more closely at Romans 1:16-17.

Paul says:

For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”

From this verse living by faith has nothing to do with finance.

It has to do with our righteousness coming from God.

Let’s look at another verse from Paul:

No one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.”

(Galatians 3:11)

Living by faith is not God miraculously supplying for us financially.

It has nothing to do with money.

Living by faith is, as Paul says, receiving the righteousness that comes from God, not relying on the law to be justified, but relying on God’s righteousness to be justified.

This is what living by faith means.

Hallelujah!

Hey!

Hey there. I’m Steve Edwards. I’m an actor, a writer, a teacher and a preacher!

This site explores the meaning of St. Paul’s words ‘by grace we are saved’. I hope it helps you to understand that we are loved by God completely, purely, fully, regardless of our mistakes. He loves us not because of who we are, but because of who He is, and what He did for us on the cross. Amen!

Please explore the hundreds of articles on the different books of the bible, and how the bible reveals that our holiness is a gift from God, and doesn’t depend on us and our good works. Thank God for that!
