For by one sacrifice he has perfected forever those who are sanctified.
– Hebrews 10:14
Let’s look at the words ‘…those who are sanctified.’
The phrase ‘are sanctified’ is in the present simple tense.
What does this mean?
Well, the present simple tense is used in 3 ways:
1. for general facts.
2. for things that are true for a long time.
3. for things that are true ALL the time.
We are sanctified.
This is a fact.
This is true for a long time.
Not only that, but it is true ALL the time!
Secondly, the phrase is written in the ‘passive’ voice.
We use the passive voice when we recieve an action.
We are not the do-ers of the action, but the recievers.
We are sanctified through Jesus.
NOT through our own good works.
We can not sanctify our selves.
He did it. Not us.
Nothing we can do can add to the work He did for us.
Nothing we can do can add to our sanctification:
‘By one sacrifice He has made perfect forever those who are sanctified.’
Just as Jesus cried from the cross:
‘It is Finished!’
He has sanctified us.
He has made us holy.
FOREVER.
