“But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness.”
– Romans 8:10
It is our body that sins. Our spirits are holy and righteous.
This is why Paul always talks about the war between our sin and our spirit.
He says:
“If I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer me that does it. It is sin living in me that does it.”
“I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live but Christ lives in me.”
“Everyone who has died has been freed from sin.”
“If we died with Christ we know that we will also live with him.”
“Fix your thoughts on Heaven because you died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”
Our body’s constant cravings to sin are the weakened cries of a dying body, one who knows it cannot win.
One day those cravings will be dead – but our spirits will be alive with Christ.
If we sin, it is not us, for we died, and our lives are hidden with Christ in God.
Our bodies are as good as dead. But our spirits are alive.
So when our sinful cravings try to pull us back towards death, as they will, let’s proclaim “I am holy in Christ!”
I love the way Paul ends his combative passage of despair in Romans 7:
“Who will rescue me from this body of death? Praise be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!”
Sin can’t win. We are alive in Christ!
